COURSE DESCRIPTION
Welcome to seventh grade Language Arts!  We will be covering the Common Core this year by reading novels, short stories, and poetry, and creating many different types of writing pieces from creative writing to short respones to On-Demand essays.  If that sounds overwhelming, don't worry!  We have nine months to get it done.  I have no doubt every student will make significant gains this year in their reading and writing abilities.

MATERIALS
  • Pens (NO PENCILS!)
  • Binder - 1 inch should do
  • Loose leaf paper
  • Composition book/Spiral Notebook - At least 80 pages
  • Scott County Public Library Card (optional, but strongly recommended)
  • Google Account (optional, but strongly recommended)
  • Personal Laptop (can be used on specified days)

GRADES & SCORING
  • Classwork - 30%
  • Homework - 15%
  • Formative Assessments (quizzes, writing assignments, etc.)- 30%
  • Summative Assessments (end of unit tests, final projects)- 25%

RULES & PROCEDURES
I follow the RSMS Discipline Matrix found in your Agenda.  The main theme to succeeding in my room when it comes to discipline is RESPECT.  We are all capable of respecting each other and the room materials.

While my list of rules is short, my list of  procedures is not.  We will get to know them over the next few days, and I do expect them to be followed.  If a student has an issue with a procedure, I will ask that you give up free time to be retaught the procedure until we get it right.

GETTING MORE INFORMATION
Technology can be a beautiful thing!  If you have questions or need additional assistance, you can contact me the following ways:
  • E-mail me at matthew.foster@scott.kyschools.us - I normally respond during the school day, usually in less than 24 hours.
  • Follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/FosterRSMS - I post homework there, and you can ask questions that get sent directly to my phone!
  • Check my blog at mrfostersclass.blogspot.com - I will try to post information from class as quickly as possible there.

ATTENDANCE & TARDINESS POLICY
In order to succeed in any endeavor, you have to show up.  Excessive absences will lead to a parent conference to ascertain the issue.  Three tardies to my class in a nine weeks will lead to disciplinary action, most likely a detention before or after school.

When a student has an excused absence, they have as many days as they were absent to make up the work.  Additional extensions can be granted, but the student MUST discuss this with me!

STUDENT & PARENT SIGNATURE
Your first Homework Assignment!  Time to get an A. Please sign this syllabus, and take it home and have a parent/guardian sign it.  DO NOT DETACH THE SIGNATURES!
