Reflective Letter Outline
The purpose of a reflective letter is to show how much you have grown as a reader and a writer.
Intro Paragraph
1-2 – Greet your reader and tell the reader why you are writing to them.
1-2 – Recall a memory in school about reading or writing (5th or 6th grade)
1-2 – Tell how that memory reminds you of a quote from the quote sheet.
1-2 – Brag about what you are good at in reading and writing
Thesis Paragraph
1 – Say that you now understand that reading and writing are connected.
1 – Tell about something you learned from a book or poem and how you have used what you learned in your own writing (for example: imagery from Buffalo Dance)
1- Tell about something you learned from transactive reading (science, social studies, and AHPL) and how you have used what you learned in your own writing (for example: how to explain facts in your science transactive piece)
1- Say that you still face many challenges in your reading and writing life.
3rd Paragraph
1- Restate the second sentence from the thesis paragraph
1-2 - Write about a specific skill you learned about from the book or poem and explain why that book or poem is a good example of that skill.
1-2 – Explain how you have used that skill in your own writing, and how it has helped you.
1-2 – Give another example from the book or poem.
1-2 – Explain again how you have used it, and how it has helped you.
4th Paragraph
1- Restate the third sentence from your Thesis Paragraph
1-2 – Write about a specific skill you have learned about from reading in science, social studies or AHPL, and why it is important
1-2 – Explain how you have used that skill in your own writing and how it has helped you
1-2 – Write about another skill that you have learned about from reading in science, social studies or AHPL, and why it is important.
1-2 – Explain again you have used that skill in your own writing and how it has helped you
5th Paragraph
1 – Restate the 4th sentence from your thesis paragraph
1- Tell about a challenge you still have as a reader/writer
1-2 - Tell about why this is still a challenge
1- Tell about a challenge you still have as a reader/writer
1-2 - Tell about why this is still a challenge
1- Tell about a challenge you still have as a reader/writer

6th Paragraph
1 – Say that you have some literary goals for the future
1 – State a goal that you have in reading or writing
1-2 – How you are going to reach that goal

Conclusion
1- Acknowledge your reader, thank them for reading the letter
1 – Briefly re-state your thesis (one sentence!!!)

1 – End with a positive vision you have for yourself in the future
