NEW TOPIC!!! There are a ton of websites out there that I am sure you go to daily to check different stuff, from social networking to sports to news, etc. You have two choices to respond to:

1. What sites do you use that really help you with your schoolwork (any class)? Why are they so helpful? (Provide links if you know how!)

The Long Trip Home... And Back!

Last last Sunday, my wife Laura and I went on a grand road trip across the United States to visit my family in Southern California for Christmas... we just arrived home tonight! It was a pretty great trip, filled with a lot of very memorable moments, both good and bad. I thought you might enjoy a timeline of the trip.

Saturday, Dec 18th - Go to the doctor, find out I have strep. Great.

Sunday, Dec 19th - Despite the strep, we leave on time. We take I-64 through Louisville, Indiana, and Illinois, then head through the great city of St. Louis. We drive all the way through Missouri, and stop at the Holiday Inn in Overland Park, Kansas for the night (it is a suburb of Kansas City). We meet up with an college friend of ours and we go out to dinner at some well thought-of Chinese restaurant. It was quite good, but the portions were ridiculous; seriously, the chicken pieces in the Orange Chicken that my friend Gabe had were the size of tennis balls. I have never seen anything like that. After a fun night with Gabe and his girlfriend, we head our respective ways to rest up for the next day of trekking.

Monday, Dec 20th - No complimentary breakfast, Holiday Inn? Anyway, we hit the road early and spend most of the day driving through Kansas on I-70... it's one of those big square states that seem to never end. Eventually, we get to the Colorado border, and we finally arrive at Denver in the early evening. We stay with another college friend, Brendan, who lives in an apartment downtown on the 31st floor... needless to say, the view of the Rockies is incredible (but I said it anyway). We enjoy Denver's best Mexican food, and spend the night catching up with each other. But, unfortunately, we find out our road may get a little hairy in the morning...

Tuesday, Dec 21st - No complimentary breakfast, Brendan? I kid. We check the weather and decide to go for the scenic drive across the Rockies and Utah on I-70. It was, admittedly, a nearly fatal mistake... ever hit ice patches while going down the Vail Pass at 70 mph with semi-trucks around you? More on that later, if you are interested...

Once upon a sunny morning a man who sat in a breakfast nook looked up from his scrambled eggs to see a white unicorn with a golden horn quietly cropping the roses in the garden. The man went up to the bedroom where his wife was still asleep and woke her. "There's a unicorn in the garden," he said. "Eating roses." She opened one unfriendly eye and looked at him.
"The unicorn is a mythical beast," she said, and turned her back on him. The man walked slowly downstairs and out into the garden. The unicorn was still there; now he was browsing among the tulips. "Here, unicorn," said the man, and he pulled up a lily and gave it to him. The unicorn ate it gravely. With a high heart, because there was a unicorn in his garden, the man went upstairs and roused his wife again. "The unicorn," he said,"ate a lily." His wife sat up in bed and looked at him coldly. "You are a booby," she said, "and I am going to have you put in the booby-hatch."
The man, who had never liked the words "booby" and "booby-hatch," and who liked them even less on a shining morning when there was a unicorn in the garden, thought for a moment. "We'll see about that," he said. He walked over to the door. "He has a golden horn in the middle of his forehead," he told her. Then he went back to the garden to watch the unicorn; but the unicorn had gone away. The man sat down among the roses and went to sleep.
As soon as the husband had gone out of the house, the wife got up and dressed as fast as she could. She was very excited and there was a gloat in her eye. She telephoned the police and she telephoned a psychiatrist; she told them to hurry to her house and bring a strait-jacket. When the police and the psychiatrist arrived they sat down in chairs and looked at her, with great interest.
"My husband," she said, "saw a unicorn this morning." The police looked at the psychiatrist and the psychiatrist looked at the police. "He told me it ate a lilly," she said. The psychiatrist looked at the police and the police looked at the psychiatrist. "He told me it had a golden horn in the middle of its forehead," she said. At a solemn signal from the psychiatrist, the police leaped from their chairs and seized the wife. They had a hard time subduing her, for she put up a terrific struggle, but they finally subdued her. Just as they got her into the strait-jacket, the husband came back into the house.
"Did you tell your wife you saw a unicorn?" asked the police. "Of course not," said the husband. "The unicorn is a mythical beast." "That's all I wanted to know," said the psychiatrist. "Take her away. I'm sorry, sir, but your wife is as crazy as a jaybird."
So they took her away, cursing and screaming, and shut her up in an institution. The husband lived happily ever after.
Moral: Don't count your boobies until they are hatched.



GLOSSARY

booby: in this context, a crazy person (probably from the name of a stupid extinct bird).
booby-hatch: a mental institution, a place where the insane are kept.
breakfast nook: a little side room for eating breakfast.
browsing: sampling or tasting here and there.
"crazy as a jaybird": extremely crazy or hopelessly insane
cropping: clipping or cutting close to the root.
cursing: using dirty or obscene speech.
"Don't count your boobies until they are hatched": from the American expression "Don't count your chickens before they are hatched", meaning "Don't count on things to turn out exactly as you planned them."
gloat: a look of malice or greed.
institution: a mental institution, an insane asylum.
moral: in this context, the "lesson" of the story.
mythical: relating to a myth, hence not real.
psychiatrist: a mental doctor
solemn: grave or serious
strait-jacket: an armless belted jacket used to confine the violently insane
subdue, subduing: capturing, seizing
unicorn: a mythical beast which looks like a horse with a horn in the center of the head.

Two Great Book Series for Young Adults

Last night I finished The World We Live In, the third book in the "Moon Trilogy" by Susan Beth Pfeffer.
It was pretty good, but lacked the drama of the first two books of the series, Life As We Knew It, and The Dead and the Gone. The first two books showed the world slowly, and then more rapidly, deteriorating after an asteroid hit the moon and brought it closer to the Earth. Life as We Knew It was an easy A+ book, and it really sucked you into the drama of the situation. The Dead and the Gone, with different characters in a different place going through the same situation, was also very good. Pfeffer brought the characters that survived both books together in The World We Live In, and it felt really forced. Also, the addition of all the relationships that were seemingly painful and not meant to be for all the characters seemed like a desperate attempt to drum up some of the Twilight audience. Still, Pfeffer has created a very interesting new world, and it stayed interesting to see how the characters navigated that world and each other.

An even better series than the "Moon Trilogy" is The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. These books are great for all readers, albeit a little violent for some. In a dystopian future, the country has been divided into labor districts, each of which send two teenage candidates every year to compete in a televised deathmatch known as "The Hunger Games." The winner is the candidate that doesn't die. The plot is very much like a cross between The Lottery and Running Man, but Collins does a great job establishing this crazy new world and the characters that inhabit it. The second book, Catching Fire, starts very slowly compared to The Hunger Games, but once it gets going, it is just as fun and riveting as the first. The third book, Mockingjay, is releasing today, and already has had very positive reviews. I am looking forward to reading it very soon!

All six of these books are great reads for students, and I of course advise you to start at the beginning! Good luck and good reading!

Today in Language Arts class, we:
Went over the syllabus.
Learned how to correctly head a paper in the Endeavor Community.
Learned about the five things that make a complete sentence a complete sentence (begins with a capital letter, ends with appropriate punctuation, has a subject, has a predicate, and completes a thought).

Some classes went over the syllabus and began the district entrance exam. Either way, the homework tonight is the same!

Homework tonight: Get your syllabus signed and have all of your class supplies by Monday, August 16th!

If that sounds overwhelming, don't worry! We have nine months to get it done. I have no doubt every student will make significant gains this year in their reading and writing abilities.

I follow the RSMS Discipline Matrix found in your Agenda. The main theme to succeeding in my room when it comes to discipline is RESPECT. We are all capable of respecting each other and the room materials.

While my list of rules is short, my list of procedures is not. We will get to know them over the next few days, and I do expect them to be followed. If a student has an issue with a procedure, I will ask that you give up free time to be retaught the procedure until we get it right.

When a student has an excused absence, they have as many days as they were absent to make up the work. Additional extensions can be granted, but the student MUST discuss this with me!

Reflective Letter Outline

The purpose of a reflective letter is to show how much you have grown as a reader and a writer.

Intro Paragraph

1-2 – Greet your reader and tell the reader why you are writing to them.

1-2 – Recall a memory in school about reading or writing (5^th or 6^th grade)

1-2 – Tell how that memory reminds you of a quote from the quote sheet.

1-2 – Brag about what you are good at in reading and writing

1 – Say that you now understand that reading and writing are connected.
